8 Teams in the division
The teams are divided into 2 sub-groups of 4 that play round robin, followed by the 4th place teams playing each other, the 3rd place teams, etc. This allows me to separate comparable teams from the same league to decrease the likelihood they play each other. This is my personal favorite because it allows the tournament to end with a championship game for the best teams while giving all the other teams their closest competition of the weekend. Trophies go to 1st and 2nd and medals go to 3rd place finishers.
7 Teams in the division
This is a "random" round robin where you will play 4 other teams in the division (and not play 2 others) with trophies decided by points. This is my second least favorite and usually results from someone dropping out late. On the plus side, this gives me the flexibility to have as many as 3 teams from the same league not play each other. Unfortunately it is possible for a team to be undefeated and not get first place. Trophies go to 1st and 2nd and medals go to 3rd.
6 Teams in the division
This is a "random" round robin where you will play 4 other teams in the division (and not play 1 other) with trophies decided by points. In the first years of the tournament, I didn’t like this, but I have found that it works out extremely well since we often have 2 teams from the same league in the division and I can schedule so they do not play each other. It is possible for 2 teams to be undefeated but the 2 teams would have played all the same opponents so they have equal opportunities, they just don’t get to play each other. Trophies go to 1st and 2nd and medals go to 3rd.
5 Teams in the division
This is my second favorite and was the original goal of the tournament when we started in 1995. This is a "pure" round robin where all 5 teams play each other and the winner is determined by points. Trophies go to 1st and 2nd.
4 Teams in the division
This is my least favorite, because it requires teams to play the same opponent a second time at the tournament. Teams play a round robin format for the first 3 games and then 1st plays 2nd for trophies and 3rd plays 4th in the consolation game. Trophies go to 1st and 2nd.
3 Teams in the division
Separately there would never be a 3 team division, but when only 3 "A" and 3 "B" teams apply, I match them up so that "A" and "B" play each other for the 2 games on Saturday and then play round robin within their group on Sunday. Saturday’s games do not count in the point standings except for red or yellow cards used in the Sunday tie breaker. (Also any forfeits on Saturday result in a 3 point per forfeited game deduction to Sunday’s points.) There is a 1st and 2nd place trophy for both the "A" and "B" flights.
